Rugerero Twa Village, Rwanda

The Twa, a pygmy people, were the original inhabitants of Rwanda. Over the centuries, they have been subjugated by the Hutu and Tutsi and driven from their land without compensation. Occupying only 1% of the Rwandan population, the Twa live in dire poverty, discarded and forgotten. They have become invisible.

Moved by their talent, energy, and also their desperate situation, Barefoot Artists began assisting the Twa in 2009 through a goat project. With the guidance from Jean Bosco Musana, the Red Cross Regional Director, the goat project mobilized the community while building assets for families.

In following two years, guided by Musana, Barefoot Artists launched a series of programs that transformed the Rugerero Twa Village from destitution into a vibrant community, which has since dazzled the public with their enthusiasm and vibrant creativity.

Our programs include the construction of a unique pottery community center with the full engagement of the Twa community, purchasing for them some good land for farming, and sponsoring activities that empower them to be true to themselves while taking steps to become successful in the Rwandan society. “There is a big change in their attitude toward themselves and their sense of the future. They are now hopeful and proud,” commented Jean Bosco Musana. Read more about the project.
